Intern Position Information

The Maryland State Police offers an intern program to enhance the criminal justice and law enforcement curricula of high schools, colleges and universities by offering volunteer opportunities for experiential and student service learning.

This program is designed to meet both the academic and career objectives of students while providing useful administrative and operational support services to the Maryland State Police.

The goals of the Student Intern Program are as follows:

* To provide students the opportunity to become familiar with police operations an better understand, through direct experience and training, the complexities of the criminal justice system.

* To foster students' interest in law enforcement careers

* To assist students interested in pursuing a law enforcement career with the Maryland State Police or other law enforcement agencies, prepare for the police officer application process

* To enable high school, college and graduate school students to earn course credits and gain valuable career-related experience through meaningful and appropriate volunteer work.

* To offer high school students the opportunity to earn community service credits toward graduation.

* To encourage and support a culture of community service among young people and build a foundation of commitment to volunteering.

Intern Rules of Conduct

Interns will obey all orders from superiors, whether written or verbal, except when compliance with such orders require commission of an illegal act. Interns to whom conflicting orders are issued will contact the First Sergeant, or in his/her absence the Duty Officer to resolve conflict.

PERSONAL APPEARANCE

Interns will maintain a neat, well-groomed appearance and will style hair and clothing consistent with established policy and procedures of the office. Interns will dress in a professional manner depending on their assignment. Proper dress will include: males will wear dress pants (no jeans), collar shirt and shoes. Females may wear skirts (knee length or longer only), dress pants (no jeans), shirt and shoes.

NEGLECT OF DUTY

Interns will be punctual in attendance to all requirements of duty, court appointments, and other assignments. Interns will not, without proper authorization, absent themselves from assigned work place during their tour of duty. Interns will remain awake and alert while on duty. Interns will not read, play games, watch television or movies, or engage in an activity or personal business while on duty that would cause neglect or inattentiveness to that duty. Interns will act professional at all times. The interns will make no unauthorized personal telephone calls, or have any unauthorized visitors.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

Interns shall treat official business as confidential. Interns shall not criticize or ridicule the Maryland State Police or troopers by speech or in writing. Interns will not report to the barrack with any intoxicating beverages or controlled dangerous substances in their system or weapons in their possession. Interns will not operate MSP vehicles and while riding in police vehicles will utilize safety equipment. Interns will not engage in police activities. Interns are only to observe police activities.
