The first six women Troopers graduated from the Maryland State Police Academy in 1974. Like today, this first graduating class wore the same uniforms and performed the same duties as their male counterparts. Women continue to be an integral part of the Maryland State Police, serving in a variety of assignments and have obtained ranks as high as Lieutenant Colonel. Many women choose the Maryland State Police because it offers so many career paths and because being a Trooper allows them to provide financial security and benefits for their families.

In 1957, the first African American Trooper, Milton Sylvester Taylor, took his first assignment in the Investigation-Identification Division. Trooper Taylor quickly worked his way through the ranks of Trooper First Class, Corporal, Sergeant, and Detective Sergeant and retired with the rank of Captain. Since Captain Taylor began his career, the Maryland State Police has welcomed all minorities as a way to strengthen our ranks and effectively represent all of the Maryland citizens we serve.

The Maryland State Police’s first Hispanic Commissioned Officer, Ivan Quinones, began his law enforcement career in 1988 with his assignment at the College Park Barracks. While at College Park, Officer Quinones served as a Barrack’s recruiter and member of the color guard. Later, he joined the Department’s first Drug Interdiction Unit and earned the ranks of Sergeant, Detective Sergeant and Lieutenant before retiring in 2010. Lieutenant Quinones is only one example of how citizens of Hispanic origin are valued by the Maryland State Police and are an important component of our workforce. Additionally, we offer financial incentives to bilingual employees who meet the conditions of the Department’s bilingual program.
