Harford County, Maryland is a transitional suburban/rural county that encompasses 448 square miles with an estimated population of 250,000. There is an estimated 764 miles of state roadways for which troopers are responsible for both traffic and criminal calls. The role of the 45 troopers assigned to the Bel Air Barrack is to passionately ensure that the primary objectives of the Maryland State Police are met. Primary objectives of the Maryland State Police are:
-
Preserving the public peace
-
Enforcing the laws and ordinances of the State and its local subdivisions
-
Arresting lawbreakers
-
Maintaining the safe and orderly flow of traffic on public ways
-
Cooperating and assisting allied law enforcement agencies in carrying out their duties
-
Fullfilling our own duties in a dignified manner so as to inspire the confidence of the public
In addition to ensuring that these objectives are met, troopers within Harford County have further refined our duties and responsibilities. Troopers recognize that our roadways are congested and have made it their mission to improve roadway safety by concentrating traffic enforcement efforts on "high crash" areas. To maximize law enforcement resources and to achieve higher visibility within "high crash" areas, troopers have partnered with allied agencies in Harford County to include the: Harford County Sheriff's Office, Aberdeen Police Department, Havre De Grace Police Department, and the Bel Air Police Department. This partnership has resulted in formulation of the Harford County Traffic Task Force which has not only improved safety in designated "high crash" areas along state roadways, but has improved traffic safety in areas designated as problematic by our partners.
Troopers also rely on Public Service Announcements (close media partnerships) and frequent attendance at community events to keep our community informed of activities (criminal and traffic) that could affect their quality of life and safety. All troopers have access to the newest and most current crime fighting tools which they use to ensure that all leads are exhausted in criminal and traffic cases.
In closing, Bel Air Barrack troopers are committed to ensuring that their mission within Harford County is accomplished and to treat our citizens with compassion and dignity during any situation encountered.
