On April 27, 2011, the Princess Anne Barracks received a 9-1-1 y call from a distraught woman, indicating her recently separated husband was considering suicide. She said if he knew the police were called he would point his gun at the them, so they would shoot him.
Four troopers from the Princess Anne Barrack dispatched to the scene, formulated a tactical plan prior to arriving at the home. The troopers were familiar with this man’s mental instability, his possession of a handgun and his history of arrests for assault.
After establishing a perimeter, the troopers attempted to communicate with the husband, but were unsuccessful. The doors and the windows of the residence were open, but no movement inside could be detected, so the troopers tactically moved in for a closer look. Trooper First Class Carl Tyler and Trooper Ryan Watkins opened a door to obtain a better view and saw the man asleep on the couch.
At that moment, TFC Tyler leaped through the doorway and secured the suicidal husband, noticing the loaded handgun on the couch and several bullet holes in the ceiling. The troopers’ tactical plan to approach the residence was executed with the highest standards of officer safety, leading to a non-confrontational apprehension of an emotionally unstable individual.
For their professional police actions and outstanding performance, Sergeant Dale Murphy, Trooper First Class Carl Tyler, Trooper First Class Jeremy Smith, and Trooper Ryan Watkins are awarded Certificates of Recognition.
During the U.S. Open Golf Tournament, at Congressional Golf Club on June 22, 2011, Trooper First Class Paul Zimmerman was working as a player escort in concert with officers from the Montgomery County Police Department. Shortly before 10:30 a.m. that morning, TFC Zimmerman was called to the 11th fairway for a twenty-nine year-old unconscious man who was convulsing and did not have a pulse.
TFC Zimmerman quickly administered CPR. A Montgomery County Fire Rescue Basic Life Support Team arrived and continued CPR and defibrillated the patient using an AED device. Doctors from the George Washington Hospital Center arrived next and administered additional medical interventions, to include IV medications. Just prior to being transported to the hospital, the young man began experiencing a normal heart rhythm and regained consciousness.
There is no doubt the actions of TFC Zimmerman and other’s who responded to the scene, saved the spectator’s life. For his calm and composed actions during a life-threatening medical emergency, Trooper First Class Paul N. Zimmerman’s receives the Life Saving Award.
