​Trooper First Class Lanzi was responding to a call for help from a Cecil County sheriff's deputy. The deputy had called for backup due to a man with a gun at the scene of an impaired driving crash on Route 238. Trooper First Class Lanzi was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Route 213 near Town Point Road about seven miles south of Elkton. His patrol vehicle veered off the roadway during a downpour and hit a tree.​
