Corporal Edward M. Toatley, 37 years old, father of three, and 16 year veteran of the force, was shot and critically wounded in Washington, D.C. on October 30, 2000, working as part of an inter-agency task force "Safe Streets." This task force had been investigating drug activity in Prince George's County and Washington, D.C. Corporal Toatley is survived by his wife, Inez, a civilian employee with the Maryland State Police, and three children, ages 18 months, 5 years and 18 years. Corporal Toatley was the President of the Coalition of Black Maryland State Troopers. Colonel David B. Mitchell, Superintendent of the Maryland State Police said, "Ed was a dedicated Maryland State Trooper who loved his family, his fellow Troopers, and he loved serving and protecting the people of Maryland. He was a courageous Trooper with a ready smile who deeply cared about doing his best. He gave his all tonight and will forever be known as a Fallen Hero of the Maryland State Police." Governor of Maryland Parris N. Glendening added, "The death of Trooper Edward M. Toatley is a tragic reminder that law enforcement officers put themselves in the line of danger every minute of every day to protect the safety of all our citizens." The Governor also added that "Trooper Toatley's contributions will not be forgotten and his memory will be honored as a true Fallen Hero of Maryland." The suspect was captured in New York on November 12, 2000.
